For individuals experiencing dental concerns such as crowded or crooked teeth, bite irregularities, and gaps between teeth, orthodontic treatment can help create a more aesthetically pleasing smile. Straighter teeth can also contribute to improved oral health.
At The Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, cosmetic dentist Robert Rioseco, DDS can help many patients achieve the smile of their dreams with orthodontic options. Along with his compassionate and helpful team, Dr. Rioseco strives to educate patients on their chosen treatment, and that includes debunking any misconceptions they may have.
Misconception #1 – Traditional metal braces are the only orthodontic options.
For decades, metal braces were the go-to for orthodontic concerns. Nowadays, Invisalign® is a popular orthodontic approach because of its more discreet appearance and ability to be removed for cleaning, eating, and drinking. Invisalign® treatment involves a series of clear aligners that gradually shift teeth over time. A set of aligners will be worn for about two weeks before the next set in the series is utilized, helping move teeth into a more desirable position.
Misconception #2 – Orthodontic treatment is only for younger patients.
Orthodontic treatment is frequently associated with adolescents. For example, Invisalign® Teen is designed for younger patients and can be more beneficial for what is often a more self-conscious time in one’s life. However, adults can pursue orthodontic treatment, as well. Patients of virtually all ages struggle with smile concerns such as misalignment, gaps between teeth, and bite irregularities that can be addressed with options such as Invisalign® and braces.
Misconception #3 – Orthodontic treatment is always expensive.
Many people think that orthodontic treatment is a costly investment. The cost of Invisalign® typically ranges from $2,500 to $6,500, depending on a patient’s needs. Many practices, including ours, also offer financing options to help make treatment payments more manageable for qualified applicants. Additionally, if your insurance policy covers Invisalign®, we will collaborate with your dental insurance provider to design an orthodontic treatment plan that best optimizes your coverage.
Misconception #4 – Straightening teeth takes a long time.
Orthodontic treatment can vary from patient to patient. The timeline will often be determined by an individual’s specific orthodontic needs and anatomy, as more severe issues may require a longer treatment time. In most cases, the Invisalign® process takes between 9 and 15 months.
Misconception #5 – Orthodontic treatment is only for cosmetic improvements.
While orthodontic treatment can improve aesthetic smile issues, there are additional functional benefits. When tooth and bite alignment are corrected, it can be easier to chew, bite, and speak. Additionally, by reducing the number of areas where food can get stuck between crooked teeth, it can be easier to brush, floss, and maintain strong oral health.
Misconception #6 – Orthodontic treatment is painful.
It is often assumed that orthodontic treatment is painful. Invisalign® is generally considered more comfortable than metal braces, though patients may experience slight discomfort as teeth initially begin to shift. That can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. The lack of brackets and wires may also minimize chances of irritation within the mouth.
Misconception #7 – I don’t have to do anything once my orthodontic treatment is done.
Following orthodontic treatment, it is usually recommended that patients wear a retainer to prevent teeth from shifting back. Oftentimes, retainers will only need to be worn at night. Dr. Rioseco can discuss a patient’s retainer use and wear based on their individual needs following completion of their primary orthodontic treatment process.
